Established in January 2012 Hardwick Hampers produces quality home-made, hand crafted hamper gifts.
Based in the Abergavenny area, founder Nicholas Snell has over 17 years global experience in the hospitality industy – including the Savoy Group.
Nick: “Hardwick Hampers is unique because, unlike other hamper businesses, everything is made in-house. I hand roll the biscuits and jar the jams, chutneys and peanut butters that I make. Our customers get to pick and choose the products that are put into the hampers, making them great individualized gifts.”
At present there are fifteen edible goodies available in the range, which can be purchased individually or as part of a bespoke gift hamper.
The range includes the Wales True Taste Gold Award winning Cheese Sable. This melt-in-the-mouth, crumbly cheese biscuit is made with cheddar and parmesan cheeses, with a touch of nutmeg.
Nick says that the development of the recipe is all thanks to ex-High Sheriff of Monmouthshire, Lady Diana. “I used to provide private dining for Lady Diana. She loved my sables as part of a cheese course which inspired me to make them the best they could be.”
Word got out and the Sables soon started to gain popularity in the area. And then he heard that he’d been nominated for a Wales True Taste Award. “Just to be nominated for an award for my Sables at such a prestigious event was incredible, but I couldn’t believe that I would win”.
But win they did. Nick continues, “Being at the award ceremony was incredible. Mixing with some of my Welsh food heroes was amazing. We are so lucky to live in a country with such amazing produce and to be part of that was an extremely proud point in my life.”
“When Hardwick Hampers was called out as the gold winner”, Nick continues, “ I went into shock. I have always had faith in my Cheese Sables but to get such high profile recognition was a complete surprise. Going up to collect the award is a complete blur.”
So Nick – what’s the secret to starting a new business in these difficult times?
“Of course you need a great product, but it’s more than that. Small businesses in Abergavenny are very supportive of each other and I couldn’t have done it without their help. I would like to thank Sugarloaf Catering Shop, Llanelan Farm Shop, Made in Usk, Crickhowell Resource Centre and Chepstow Tourist Information Centre who have supported my dream, offered advice and also stock my products. In these hard economic times we all need to support local business and that is something the Abergavenny area is very good at doing.”
